On Monday, at the Cristal Bowling in Wittelsheim, France, four bowling duets from Germany, Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands stood in a fight for the European Women Bowling Championships 2024 medals at the Doubles event.
Germany, who secured the top spot in the Doubles semifinals at the eleventh hour, stood in a fight against the Netherlands, while Sweden faced Finland.
In the first semifinal, no one could challenge Germany's duo, Franziska Czech and Sabrina Laub. Czech scored 278, while Laub added 276, combining for a total of 554 points. This impressive score not only defeated the Netherlands (Beaudine Kriele & Denise Blankenzee) 554-395 but also set a new European record. The previous record of 546, held since 2006, was set by another German pair, Patricia Schwarz and Tanya Patty.
In another semifinal, Sweden's Nora Johansson and Josefin Hermansson were close to the European record as well, scoring 266 and 267, respectively. It was more than enough to beat Finland's Jenni Heino and Eliisa Hiltunen 533-384.
In the final, Germany performed strongly once again. With an impressive score of 498 (Laub 230, Czech 268), Germany's duet claimed victory against Sweden's Nora Johansson and Josefin Hermansson 498-427, earning Germany's first EWC 2024 gold medals.
